Mind the Gap - The People of Wimbledon Cemetery - Guided Walk

One of London's overlooked Victorian cemeteries – telling the stories of some of the people buried in Gap Road Cemetery in Wimbledon.

Gap Road Cemetery, opened in 1876, features twenty acres of tranquility with three chapels, and was designed by Sir Banister Fletcher. Notable features include the pink and grey granite Cooke Mausoleum of 1885 and a memorial tablet commemorating Belgian WWI refugees.

The walk highlights various residents including actress Imogen Hassall, engineer Sir Colin Scott-Moncrieff, poet Eliza Cook, illustrator Fred Barnard, author Eleanor Hull, and railway legend Charles Collett. Sports history is represented through footballer Jack Curtis and commentator Tommy Woodrooffe.

Geoff Simmons runs Summerstown182, a community history project in south west London – specialising in walks, talks, tours and putting up plaques; always with a message of 'peace, love and flower to the people'.
